“The most important commandment is this: …. you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength. The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. No other commandment is greater than these.”   Mark 12:30-31

Often times, the greatest difference we can make in our neighbors lives, is to give the gift of hospitality.  Please look over the numerous programs at Lake Travis United Methodist Church and the in our community and let us know how you would like to participate.  We would love to have you join us in working to fulfill the greatest commandment, by offering hope, kindness and a helping hand for disadvantaged children and families in the LTUMC community.

SUMMER LUNCH PROGRAM

summerlunchprogram_webEach Friday during the summer, volunteers meet at the church to prepare nutritious brown bag lunches. The lunches are then distributed by food truck to needy children and adults in several trailer parks in our area. Books and clothing are also made available. PRINCIPIOS CHIQUITOS  (Small Beginnings)

Principios Chiquitos, Small Beginnings, is our Hispanic outreach at Lake Travis United Methodist Church.  It had its small start in February 2005 and has continually grown each year. To volunteer for any of the projects under the Principios Chiquitos outreach program, email Patty Rosemurgy, or call 266-9877 ext. 24

The Principios Chiquitos program includes the following 6 projects:

1. AMIGOS NETWORK
The network responds to families who have immediate and critical needs.  It’s an email contact group that receives alerts with requests for such items as diapers, shoes, etc.  To become part of this ‘quick response’ team email Patty Rosemurgy.

2. BACK TO SCHOOL SHOE & SOCK DRIVE  (Los zapatos para la Escuela)

In order to help children return to school in the fall with bold and confident steps, we run a shoe and sock drive in August.  Lake Travis United Methodist Women provides the organization for the project, and contributions come from the entire congregation. Families submit their children’s shoe sizes and participants purchase a new pair of shoes.  They are picked up by parents before the first day of school.

3. CHRISTMAS ANGEL TREE   (Navidad Angel Arbol)
angeltree_gifts
The Angel Tree program provides Christmas gifts for underprivileged families.  Our members select cards with children’s names from the Angel tree and take care of the shopping.  Gifts are wrapped and delivered at a Christmas party at the church.

4. LAS PALOMAS PRESCHOOL
This bilingual preschool program is available during the school year for preschool children 3 and older.  Classes are on Tuesday and Thursday, from 8:30 am – 2:30 pm.   Funding for this program is provided by the church and contributions.

5. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL  (Escuela Biblca de Vacaciones)

Each year at Vacation Bible School, we offer a class that is delivered in Spanish.  For those Hispanic children who are able, they will be part of the mainstream VBS programs.

6. ENGLISH LANGUAGE FAMILY NIGHT  El Idioma inglés la Noche Familiar  (ELFN)
EnglishLanguageFamilyNight
ELFN meets on Thursday nights from 6:30 – 8:30 pm.  This program offers support and instruction in English for the whole family.
ELFN Adults – The adult class is led by an experienced ESL instructor.  It is also staffed with a team of volunteers each week.  Our mission is to provide a one on one experience for each student.  In this way, we are able to tailor the lesson for each individual.
ELFN Children and Youth – Bilingual leadership is provided to support these young students with their homework, tutoring, reading and language development.
ELFN Infants, Toddlers and Preschoolers – Nursery care is provided for the youngest of our guests.  Appropriate interaction and activities are offered.

LAKE TRAVIS CRISIS MINISTRIES

Lake Travis Crisis Ministries is an ecumenical organization that serves people living in the Lake Travis Independent School District.  The organization was born in 1988 as a food pantry,  to provide food assistance to single mothers. Although Lake Travis Crisis Ministries began as a food pantry, it has expanded  to  include assistance with food, rent, utilities, day care, insurance, car expenses, clothing, some medical and prescription expenses, heaters, and fans.

Lake Travis United Methodist Church has helped support this ministry since 1988 and our support continues today through financial assistance, volunteers and regularly scheduled food and diaper collections at the church.

If you would like to volunteer at Lake Travis Crisis Ministries call 512-266-9810. To learn more, visit their website at Lake Travis Crisis Ministries.

PARTNERS IN HOPE

pih-logo-smallPartners in Hope is a Lake Travis ministry that connects people who desire physical, emotional, and spiritual help with people who will help.  LTUMC is one of many churches in the area who participate by providing volunteers for building and repair projects. Every 3rd Saturday Partners in Hope has a workday at a home in the Lake Travis community.  LTUMC also provides weekly meeting space for this important ministry to our neighbors. Visit the  Partners in Hope website here.

Literacy Partners

Literacy_Partners-LOGO_1

A few years ago, the church community asked city leaders what we could do to make a lasting impact in our city. The answer was simple: help them fight illiteracy and school dropout rates. Literacy Partners sit down with elementary children each week for 30 minutes to read one-on-one. With the program growing rapidly and with more and more children in need of special attention, there’s a place for you to make a difference in a child’s life and education. Consider investing just 30 minutes a week at a Lake Travis school near you, and bless the life of                                           a child. Please go to education-connection.org for more information!
