Lake Travis United Methodist Church is a local congregation whose mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
Our church is connected with other United Methodist churches and organizations which offer Christ and bring ministries of relief and hope around the world. The United Methodist Church is a modern expression of a revival movement led by John Wesley in England in the 1700s.
Lake Travis United Methodist Church is a “Disciple’s Path” church, where we invite seekers and believers to be part of a life-long journey of growth. With God’s help and by God’s grace, we learn what it means not only to be a faithful believer, but a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ.
WHAT IS A DISCIPLE?
We define a Christian disciple as “a follower of Jesus whose life is centering on loving God and loving others.” God is reaching out to us and touching our hearts even before we know or understand God, calling us out of the darkness and brokenness of human life.
When we do turn to God and say “yes” to Jesus by faith, we are reconciled with God. By God’s grace we are forgiven and redeemed for the wholeness that God originally intended for our lives, and we are called to a new life through the atoning work of Jesus Christ on the cross.
Our new life as disciples of Jesus Christ is a life in which God’s higher power helps us to turn from human sin and rebellion. In short God’s grace helps us to reject the evil powers and forces of this world, and to grow in a life of love and service that is modeled for us by Jesus.
The power of God’s grace not only offers forgiveness, but a power to grow and change in this life, and the ultimate gift of eternal life with God in victory over the powers of sin and death. We share the fruits of this new life in ministry and service to others. We love and care, not because we need to earn more favor with God, but we give ourselves in loving care and service as a grateful response to God who first loved us and saved us.
The apostle Paul writes, “So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17 NRSV) This new life in Christ is a pure gift of God that we do not earn or deserve in any way. The fact that God reaches out to us in Christ to save us while we are yet sinners is the very miracle and gift of God’s grace.
So out of love for God and in response to God’s saving love for us in Jesus Christ, we give ourselves to the work and mission of “making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.”
DISCIPLE’S PATH WORKBOOK
